WHAT ARE SPMS?

SPMs, which stands for Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators, are a family of bioactive lipids that we synthesize in our bodies from omega-3 EPA and DHA, and that promote the resolution of the inflammatory response.

Unlike traditional anti-inflammatory agents, SPMs do not suppress the inflammatory response, but rather actively regulate it, promoting its natural physiological resolution without compromising the immune system.

SPMs comprise several subfamilies, including resolvins (E and D series), protectins, maresins, and lipoxins, as well as their precursors, 17-HDHA, 14-HDHA, and 18-HEPE. These molecules exert specific functions on immune cells such as neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes, facilitating the termination of the inflammatory process: arresting leukocyte migration, eliminating cellular debris (efferocytosis), restoring tissue homeostasis, and regenerating tissue.

Given the recent identification of these SPMs and their known mechanism of action, SPMs represent an emerging therapeutic paradigm in the management of inflammation in different conditions, including athletes.

INFLAMMATION AND SPORT

High-performance sports and resistance training induce an acute inflammatory state that is essential for musculoskeletal tissue adaptation and remodeling; however, its efficient resolution is crucial to prevent progression to persistent inflammation, chronic fatigue, overuse injuries, and muscle loss.

Sports injuries associated with inflammation and pain:

  • Muscle damage from intense exercise
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Overload or stress fractures
  • Concussion and mild brain injury (TBI)
  • Disorders linked to fear and anxiety

Athletes often opt for conventional treatments for inflammation and pain, but these focus on inhibiting, suppressing, or blocking the natural acute inflammatory response, which can delay or hinder its resolution and cause side effects. Unlike these, SPMs do not block inflammation; instead, they support the body's ability to resolve this process naturally without suppressing the immune response.

In this context, supplementation with specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) has demonstrated potential to modulate inflammation, allowing for faster and optimal functional recovery without interfering with exercise-induced adaptations.

SPMs: Real Science. Real Results

The promise of SPMs is based on replicable scientific evidence, quantifiable results, and observable benefits both in the laboratory and in the real world. Unlike conventional approaches that focus on inhibiting or suppressing inflammatory symptoms, SPMs act physiologically to resolve inflammation at its source, without interfering with protective immune mechanisms.

In controlled clinical studies, SPMs have demonstrated tangible benefits such as:

  • Reduction of joint pain and stiffness.
  • Improved recovery after intense physical exercise.
  • Decrease in inflammatory markers in the blood.
  • Reduction in the need for painkillers in various conditions.
  • Improving cognitive function and mood in the context of neuroinflammation.

These results are supported by rigorous quality control, validated analytical methods, and complete traceability from raw materials to final product.
